‘What is the weirdest thing you have ever been asked at an Interview?’
We recently we ran a poll on our Instagram @novatasrecruitment
As we are obviously a professional outlet all the people that participated are kept entirely confidential…
As you can imagine the results were GOLDEN
We had everything from being asked to conduct an on the spot presentation about what object best describes them in the room, other mobile phones being connected via Bluetooth in a zoom interview and someone hysterically swearing to the hiring manager on a phone call.
And of course someone being sold the role and walking out of the interview because it clearly wasn’t for them – to be fair they didn’t waste the hiring managers time!
Some other classic’s included being invited to a sauna for an interview, offered a job within the first 15 minutes of the interview (candidate thought the company was extremely needy so immediately declined, left and disconnected from LinkedIn). Like, would you even act this keen on a date?! Food for thought!
So when interviewing let’s remember:
- You interview to find the best possible candidate at that time for the job you are looking to fill.
- Interview based on how they will fit into the team, not just experience. Don’t get me wrong any recruiter hates hearing “we are not offering the position because they are not a cultural fit”. It’s like the time you tell your kids Santa isn’t real, TRUST ME IT HURTS! – but as humans we understand, you don’t want to recruit a sour apple because it will spread like wild fire.
- Get to know the candidate, not just professionally but on a normal human level, find out their interests outside of work – no one wants to work with a robot.
- And of course if you like them, and they can actually do the job, fire away and offer them the role!
- Final point – don’t just see a candidate through a cv, it’s just a piece of paper. You are better off employing someone who might be slightly less academically qualified or less experienced but they have the drive and ambitious to give their all! Those are the candidates that thrive and take a business to new heights!
Invest for success!
